I used to have one and it was plenty accurate for deer in it's stock form. As a matter of fact I had a buddy in the military that really liked it and he was from Texas and an avid deer hunter. So I gave it to him for Christmas one year before he was going to be stationed back in Texas. I don't know the history of mine, but it was in near perfect condition. May have been re finished I'm not sure. Really nice shooting rifle though. He was thrilled when I gave it to him.

sounds like a great gun...and a great family heirloom! keep it as is!!!!!!! I have a Russian Nagant that i hunt deer with, it is a nice rifle just to carry because of all the history around it!
