Us mid-west guys are faced with shotgun only hunts depending on the zone we hunt in...
Its a culture shock....I realize...and we learn alot on the forum chatting with each other...
Tell me...Do the people in the west realize that us mid-west hunters are taking deer at 200 yards with shotguns??
Technology & range finders have brought us in the zone with remington 1100's , H&R Ultra Slugs, Mossbergs, TC Encore Muzzleloaders....and other rifled barrels that fires sabots....
Cripled with the rules that the DNR have put on us....we have taken technology to another level.....
We're taking deer out to 200 yards with shotguns....
Is this something...ONLY SOME....of the western guys know about?....don't get me wrong....we all want to live out west...but this is what we have learned to adapt to....

Have you taken a deer at 200 with a slug? I hunt IL, and I'd prob be comfy at 100yd maybe 150, nto sure about 200, and personally I'd much rather a 400yd shot with a rifle than a 200yd shot with a slug.
I've killed my last few elk at less than 30 yards. My last mule deer was about 50 yrds. I went to a puplic place the other day and damn we couldn't shoot at coyotes with a center fire rifle, that pissed me off. I 'm getting a rifled barrel and scope from ruger mike for for my rem 870 so that won't happen again! I'll take a 300 to 400 yard shot, if I have to, I just never have to. I practice out to that range, but with patience I always seem to get the game closer. Even on public land. Good luck!

I have always felt sorry for guys who have to hunt with shotguns. I know thousands do and still bring home some venison and my hats off to them for their determination. But to someone from the southwest, it just doesn't seen like hunting.......or at least you're denied the joy of selecting that "just right" rifle, working up some pet loads and choosing your bullets etc. That would really suck.
Thank goodness I was born out here where I could shoot anything I was crazy enough to pull the trigger on.
"Do you live out West?" Not any more! Too bad! I'd go back to New Mexico, Colorado, or Alaska in a heartbeat, if it were up to me.........
I shot my last elk in the White River National Forest about 50 mni. south of Meeker, CO. He was in the black timber at about 9500 feet elevation, and walked out from some brush about 30 yards away. 1 shot, 7mm Rem. Mag., 175-grain Nosler Partition bullet. He hit the ground so hard he bounced! Beautiful country, too.

Well i live in oregon and i hope we never HAVE to hunt with shotguns.....
Three decades ago, I lived in Indiana, and then they were a "shotguns only" place. But they did permit mzzleloaders. I figured ANY rifle was better than a shotgun, so that's how I got started hunting deer with a ML. I still like them better, but "shotguns" have come a long way. Those with rifled barrels shooting sabotted bullets are merely large-bore rifles,on a par with the .45/70.....

I live in eastern Iowa, and we are in a shotgun only area.I have a Savage bolt gun, that puts three shots in about 2" at 100 yd. I haven't had the chance to check it at 200 yet, but I will sometime this spring. I bought this one just before season last year, and only got to test fire it at 100yd, but I rarely shoot that far during season. I took a doe with it at about 60yd this past season. it will be interesting to see what can be done at 200.
I have to agree that a shotgun vs Ml, the Ml is going every time. Many of these states allow smokeless Ml's, making a 300 yd shot same as a old 200 yd shot with 80g pyrodex. If you miss once, the second shot aint going to matter.
