Default 243CAL.

Would a Remington 7600243 cal.rifle be enough to take whitetail deer?
If so what grain bullet do you users of a 243 cal. use? What brand ammo/type? Can this gun knock them down, or is it a tracking game like archery?
Thank you so very much for any replys,
First time Rifle hunter.

Sure, the .243 will do fine with the right bullets and a well placed shot. Deer aren't anything special to drop. I would go with the heavier bullets and just ordinary Winchester or Remington ammo. You can buy stuff that will cost more but the deer won't be any deader. Remember in the .243, light bullets are for varmints and the heavy bullets are for deer and such. The light bullets are too explosive for good deer loads.

I've used mine since 1980, killed over 150 with it...

100gr CoreLokts, Hornady, Federal Premium, either Sierra GameKing or Nosler Partition, all work well, just let your gun tell you what it likes...

Deer run no farther after the hit than if hit with a .270, or other deer caliber.

Let your gun tell you waht it likes. Get a few different boxes of ammo and see what groups the best. I would use a minimum of 100gr ammo for deer. There are many choices for ammo for a 243. I would start with the cheaper Winchester Super-X, Remington Express type ammo. They will kill a deer just as dead as the $50 a box Winchester Supreme. And if your gun dosnt like the ammo you can use the ammo to get to know your rifle better. If you dont mind me asking where is Potsville PA at?

I know a fellow that has one in a Sako lever rifle. He has killed a tractor trailer full of deer with that rifle and factory corelockts.

Agreed. Pottsville is in the anthracite region, northeast of Harrisburg and southwest of Hazleton.

OK thanks. Thats not too far from me. I used to shoot Winchester Supreme Ballistic Silvertips but that is the only round my 30-06 liked. I traded that in on a 300 WSM because i couldnt afford to shoot the supreme ammo as much as i like. Now my Tikka will shot Winchester Super-X 180gr Power Points as good as my 30-06 ever shot supreme ammo.

Sako really did make a lever gun. It was the Sako VL-63 Finnwolffrom 1959 to 1962. They only came in 243 and 7.62 NATO (308). They are very rare since they were made in small numbers. They used a double stack magizine instead of a tubular magazine normally used.
