not understand, no explanation is possible.
A golf course is a willful and deliberate misuse of a perfectly good rifle range.
.308's use to be used in 1000yd matches all the time(many still)
.223 also good for 600yds, not sure about the other 7.62.
Thought about 6 or a 6.5? Lots of guys swear by them, though mostly crap I read off the net.
Personally, I would cut those numbers byatleast half for hunting. Except for varmints, then take a shot!
for TARGET SHOOTING, these can be shot out to 1000 meters. I know, somebody in here is going to give me all sorts of crap about it too. The ARMY marksmanship team shoots an event called SERVICE RIFLE. A young lady won the 1000 meter shoot with a standard M16 in 5.56 Cal. It can be done with practice and patience. Now, can this be done by the average shooter, probably not consistantly.
Between the calibers that you put up there, I would say look at the AR-10 by Armalite. A guy I went to Sniper School with shot one at the World Sniper Competition at FT Benning and did very well with it. That is .308 cal. for hunting, i don't know what the max range would be for most animals. Effective to 800 - 1000 meters on a person though. In case you didn't know, the AR-10 is an AR-15 style platform for larger calibers. ( just didn't want to get flamed here since you asked about AR-15's)
As for the 7.62 by 38...I really don't know anything about that.
Good Luck..

Ive only shot my AR out to 200yrds but it was hard to see the taget(open site) and off bench restI can can do ok with my PLR-16 to 150yrds...not the best pic.
You can't always have your cake and eat it too. While the .223 and .308 are, in fact, used in service rifle matches out to 1000 meters, the .223 isn't even a legalbig-game cartridge in some states.Though the .308 is a great all-around cartridge, I wouldn't recommend it over some of the .300magnumsif you'rehunting beyond 500 yards. As well, many states limit how many rounds you can have ina semi-auto'smagazine when hunting, and it'soften not a matter of how many you put in, but how many the magazine can hold (i.e. the magazine must be "pinned" to limit only 5 rounds in some states).
Is there any particular reason you're hung up on a semi-auto?
Considering that the AR-10 clones (based on .308 actions) from Armalite, DPMS and others are usually at least $400 more expensive than a bolt-action chambered in something more "potent", by the time you've added good glass, you're talking a LOT of money to have a semi-auto chambered in a caliber strong enough to hunt big-game beyond 500 meters. And it's not just rifle and glass.I have bolt-action and semi-auto rifles set up for what you describe, and I'm into the semi-auto for over $1300 more than I am the bolt-action.
I seem to recall that DPMS was marketing a rifle chambered in .300 WSM, but I know absolutely nothing about it.
Unless you want to hunt nothing larger thanvarmints at long-range, and unless you have deep pocketbooks, I'd advise you to leave the semi-autos on the shelf and buy yourself a decent bolt-action and decent scope. You'll be money ahead, and in most hunting applications you're not going to realize any advantage in the semi-auto in the first place. The only thing a semi-auto does better than a bolt gun is throw lead faster. If you absolutely think you need a semi-auto, I'd look at the Browning in something more substantial caliber-wisebefore I'd look at a"black rifle". Sure, some guys likeARs for the "cool" factor, but that's not going to put game in your freezer.
The ARMY marksmanship team shoots an event called SERVICE RIFLE.
Service rifle is shot at 200 yards standing, 300 yards sitting and prone rapid fire, and 600 yards slow fire prone.

Practice, patience, and equipment. She might have won an event at that range against other M-16s, but not against other rifles. The AR-15 pretty much rules the 600 yard line because of the advancement of VLD bullets and extra hot handloads- without both, the rifle wouldn't even be competitive against a M1 Garand at 600 yards due to wind deflection. Shooting a 1000 yards, a standard M-16/AR-15 just doesn't cut it- you need extra inches of barrel (usually 24" barrels) toget every last bit of velocity along with the hot VLD handloads mentioned above- but once again it can outshoot other heavily modified 'service rifles' if set up correctly.
