I'm betting the twist is 1-10. If memory serves, that's pretty much the standard twist in most .30 cals and I doubt Herters was any different.

Actually, the industry standard twist for the .308 Win. has always been 1/12". However, I believe Remington made SOME of their barrels, but not all, at 1/10". I doubt that any were ever made at 1/8", however. With Herter's, anything is possible. You need to measure the twist yourself, if you really need to know what it is.
About the only bullet I know of that would need 1/8" to stabilize it at .308 velocities would be the Sierra 240-grain HPBT MatchKing. I have used bullets up to 4 diameters long (Hornady 220-grain RN) in a Model 70 Featherweight(1/12") with 48 grains of Norma MRP for 2300 FPS MV. It was quite accurate. Devastating short-range white-tail load, too!
