Have a Remington 700 XCR 300wsm that absolutely would not hold groupings well at all: over 5 inch scatters. Took a few hundred dollars in ammo, time, swapping scopes, etc. to figure it out. I finally had Gander Mtn. send it back for meto them (Remington) to evaluate.
Remingtonlapped the barrel and reamed the muzzle (whatever that means...recrowned?) to "factory standards/specs" according to their return slip.
Does anyone know what that standard would be? Does it mean that this gun may shoot a 3 inch group at 100 yards, or is there a definitive acceptance (e.g. less than 1 1/2" at 100 yards)that they would have before allowing a gun to leave the doors? Will lapping the barrel make that much of a difference (improvement)in accuracy? As you can understand, I'm frustrated with spending all this money and time on something when I'd rather have just gotten a new rifle to deal with it!!

I know for a fact that they don't lap their barrels at all and I have seen some very ugly crowns on some at Gander mountain(and that is not to say that only GAnder has that type) . That would make a big difference. That gun and that cartridge has been an 1" and under gun in a Model 70, 2 weatherby vanguards, A browning Abolt and now finally a Sako 75 SM. I can't imagine it would do worse then that. Shoot it and if your not satisfied send the darn thing back..if they don't fix it right ..get rid of it. I find that guns can give a shooter good or bade Mojo and if you don't think the gun is accurate or thatit can screw up it usually affects you and your shooting.

Thats pretty telling that they recut the crown. I had a PSS, I had to have the crown recut at my gunsmith. I am thinking, how do you mess that up. They they have it on a lathe. I don't think they cut it differently. While spinning it, anyone could see a chatter or wobble. Or they didnt' care.

I had good luck with my 700xcr in 270wsm. I had a fellow benchrest friend that tune the triggerto a crisp1.5Ibs. pulland shimed the stock so barrel is free floated. I am shooting 1/2" groups at 100yds. with factory Winchester 150gr. Power Point ammo.

I too have had problems with Remington rifles i purchased a xcr in 270 the rifle simply will not shoot 4" groups at best the rifle has been bedded,floated 3 different scopes all leupold , leupold mounts burris mounts finally i sold the rifle and bought a Sako 75 ss/syn. wow what a difference.. chad
I am typically a good shooter: benchrest with sandbags, Zeiss Conquest 3x9, controlled breathing, good (expensive) ammo, etc. to get good groups. All has been gone over on the gun including swapping scopes & mounts. Gunsmith at Gander went over them as well to double-check me.
I haven't shot it since receiving it back, but as you say you can lose confidence in a piece quickly if it's not doing what you want.
On a side note, what do you think a Rocky Mtn Elk Foundation 700 XCR in 300 WSM would go for as far as trade in? To be honest, I'd like to have another just like it that shoots well!

I would ween out a few more thing before throwing in the towel (giving up on the gun) . Have you checked the bedding screws for proper torque? 2. Check to see if stockis putting pressure on one side of barrel then the other? Might try free floating barrel with shims.3.Check the bore may need a good cleaning (even if it looks clean) can still be fowled with copper. Use a good copper solvent. On my 700xcr I did a barrel break in proceedure that reduce copper fowling and improves the accuracy. 4.Trigger pull has alot to due with accuracy. 5.You say thatyou used the expensive ammo. Have you used thestandard ammo?6. Did you use lokt-tite on scope bases and rings/ Were they properly torqued? 7. On your grouping of shots was they three shot groups or more? Did you let the barrel cool between shots? 8. Check the muzzle crowncouldhave a ding in it. That can causea problem.There is plenty of things to check before trading the gun off.

if you like the rifle, just have the reciever accurised and put a good barrel on it, thats bedded properly. thats what I do, I have 4 700's, 3 have been rebarreled (2 lilja's, and a kreiger) for the factory job, groups average 1-1.25" with handloads, the other 3 average in the .2's"
