RE: 22" Barrel vs 24" Barrel in a 25-06
I have an artical based on test notes by O'Connor or that guy that did all the pistol shooting .
Any way , they took an '03a3 30-06 with a 30" bbl shot like 100 rounds of a single lot of mil. ball for a net average then cut and crowned the bbl 1" and repeated the test really big losses started under 18" like 150-250-an in. but the drop from 30" to to 22"was only about 200 fps . The losses from 26" - 22" were less than 50fps as I recall and there was an increase at 1 interval in those lengths .Keep in mind that this was a GI rifle and milatary ball ammoand shot over about a month and 100 rounds per length . The losses from 22-24 I'd bet 50 or less .

Ok found 1 referance : 25-06 26" universal reciever 1-10 twist 87 gr sp IMR 3031 42.0-47.0 vel 3113-3452
25-06 15" Thomson Encore 1-10 twist 87 gr sp IMR3031 42.0-47.0 vel 2667-3007
Looks like 445 fps with the 41,600-50,800 cup loads for 11" of bbl length published data in my lyman 48th edition manual .
Comes out to40.45-40.81 fps per in of bbl .
Hate having to quote source and dates to provide friendly info to fellow hunters and shooters and have peps think I'm some sort of know it all smart donkey.
Merry Christmas

RE: 22" Barrel vs 24" Barrel in a 25-06
My A-Bolt has a 22" barrel. Since the 25-06 works best with real slow powder, I've always wondered how much velocity I'm giving up. I've never chrony'd, but I do see a lot more muzzle flash from the A-bolt than from my son's Ruger #1 with a 26" barrel. Based on that I would say the shorter barrel gives up some speed, but I've never met a whitetail that could tell the difference.

Seems to me the difference would be insignificant when shooting at something. Paper, game, neighbors dog . . . (lol!!!) (Really . . . I LOVE dogs!!)
I mean, no matter what you're shooting, you still need to cover holes with holes in paper. That way you know exactly where your gun is shooting.
If the muzzle velocity is different by a 100 fps or so, what does that really mean out 200 yards? 1/8", 1/16", (or less)???
See what I mean? Insignificant. There are more features on a rifle that I look for than an inch or two of barrel length. Action, stock material, barrel, action material, adjutable trigger, etc.
