Hello everyone, I am looking into buying an AR-15 type rifle in .223 caliber. I would use it for coyote hunting mostly. I was curious how much these guns are going to run? Are they hard to clean? Give me any pro's and con's you see. Any and all information will help!
The prices are all over the place depending on the options. You might be able to find a plane jane ar-15 for around $750, but most are going to run closer to $900. You'll probably want to mount a scope, so te best option would be an A3 upper (flat top) which usually ads about $50 to the cost of a rifle (if it comes with a removeable carrying handle). You'll want a free float tube which adds another $100, and you might end up changing out the trigger for another $150. With all of the options, you'll be looking at well over a thousand. For about $1100 Bushmaster and a few other manufacturers make a AR set up for varmint hunting, which might be the best bet if that's what you plan to use it for.

i had tw one a new bushmaster cost me 999 new i bought a ar from the indyswat team gunsmith that had a bushmaster lower and a dpms upper good gun 800 for it
i would go with bushmaster which will cost you around 850 to 900 get a removable carry handle not just a flat top with the carry handle they look more like a military gun and are good for close shooting
or go with colt or dpms most other makers are either cheap or cost to much i would not go changing the trigger or anything unless you plan to shoot comp. there fine stock plan on arond 1000 atless there good guns and i plan to bu another bushmaster soon

I dont know about the prices, but I do know that an AR-15 in a .223 caliber is one of the best yote, bobcat, and fox guns made. I hunt for fur and have always wanted an AR.

I have a Bushmaster ORC w/16 barrel. I purchased it new with a (cheap) BEC 6x24x50 scope. This rifle is great for deer/yotes/you name it. OnceI broke it in I get sub 1"groups @ 200 yds. and am on my way to the long distance range (800 yds ) as soon as the weather gets a little better here.
Once you get a AR you will be amazed at all of the options that are available and opened up to you. I am fixing to get a dedicated upper w/ 20 bull barrel.

By the way- back to your original question-- My setup-- ORC w/scope and Harris bipod 1082, 30 round mag. anda 5 round mag.complete-- tax and all.
Check out the new R-15 that Remington is coming out with. Its based on an AR and is pretty much the same, but in full camo, and I think its supposed to have a better trigger. Its gonna be in .204 Ruger, and .223 Rem, with 2 different barrel lengths, and the website says sugg. retail of $999 I think.. A buddy of mine with a gun shop priced one for me and it was much less. Ive never had any interest in an AR, but I want one of these.

you should be able to buy a varminter for around 700.00, just order a stripped lower, and a varminter kit from somewhere like www.j&tdistributing.com, takes about 2 hours to assemble the lower, and slap the finished upper that comes with the kit on and mount your optics. AR's are basicly the same, everyone cept OLY buys parts from vendors and assembles, customs just have higher grade barrels and triggers and more bells and whistles.

CMMG is selling Bargain Bin flattops for $570 right now...will need to buy an optic or sight to mount to it, so add that and the cost of a few magazines (check to see if your state has restrictions on hunting with hi-capacity magazines or not)--but be sure to get a few 30 rounders just in case (you never know when those are gonna get hard to buy/expensive again, like during the 10 years of the "assault weapon ban")

I have a bush carbine A3, and one thing, its not that accurate. I am going to try some handloads soon. Second, since start shooting AR's, I find them a bear to clean. I feel I can't get out all the grime and nastyness. I am so used to cleaning bolts where no residue at all.
I would buy a rock river 20" heavy barrel for coyote hunting. Also, I paid 1K for my carbine.
