What are the advantages of a fluted barrel?

Reduceing weight is the #1 reason for fluting a barrel and accuracy comes in a close second in my book...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Actually, it drops about a half a pound. Thats about it. If you did the math in your heatsinking 101 classy you would see a fluted barrel would cool about 10 seconds faster to room temp that a standard one. I don't like them. The harmonics of them can hurt you more than help. I was talking to Melvin Forbes of NULA a while ago. He was explaining on his rifles, he takes metal off one side or another to make sure it is concentric. If you flute you can bet the harmonics won't be consistent down the barrel. Alot of comp shooters will tell you it usless unless your gun has to be 1/2 lighter.
