Default 25WSSM?

Whats everyone's thoughts on the 25WSSM?

I am thinking of buying one for a walking around varmint/deer/antelope gun.

I handload so when they go obsolete in a few years I'll still be OK.

I'd really love to hear from the guys that own them.

As far as i can tell the entire WSSM line is DOA, at least in my part of the world. No one has one or has any interest in buying one. A 25-06 gives you the same performance so you might want to consider that as alternative. IMO, If you like a WSSM you better get one now and buy extra brass.

the wssm's offer no real advantage over any standard cartridges available, after the landslide of buyers who bought the hype, the sales dropped off.
where the wssm's shine is that they will function through an AR-15 action, this is why I have one, as far as a hunting rifle, they can't be beat, I've yet to see a better deer cartridge than one firing a 110 accubond or 115 BT at 3100 and 3000 fps respectively.
I've taken 8 or 9 deer with mine and absolutely love it.

Ridge Runner - Thats the kind of review I like to hear. I know they offer nothing over a standard 25-06, but I like to play with odd-ball stuff that no one else has or has even heard of around here. I am already planning on getting an AR15, if I like the bolt gun. I've always wanted an AR10 in 243, but a 243WSSM may work, and be alot cheaper too I might add. I have a question on your rifle. What size mag(s) can you get? Here if I hunted deer with one, I would need a mag that holds 5 or less, I'm assuming your state is probably the same.

I know D-Tech builds 5 rounders for the WSSM line, and I think Olympic might too.

Now a 257wsm would be worthwhile.

yep, you can get a mag that only holds 5 rounds, a standard 20 rd AR mag holds 7 wssm's, though we don't have a restriction here.

The 25 wssm is the one out of all of the short mags that seems to offerthe least amount ofdifference/benefit over the original. Ballisticsare virtually, if not totally, identical to the 25-06. And the25-06 doesn'tkick much anyway. TBS,the 25 wssmmust be a heckuva deer round, since the 25-06 is nearly ideal, IMO. There's hardly any factory ammo offerings in 25 wssm, but if you reload anyway and want something different (which I completely understand) then I'd say go for it.

thanks DD, nice to be someones hero, ci, the 25wssm is 200 fps slower than a 25/06, it basicly mirrors the 257 bob +p chambering.
