Default 308

Are there any difference in a 308 verse a 270,30.06, or a 7-08 when it comes to deer hunting and killing the animal cleanly.

Dead is dead, 308 would kill just as effectivly as any of these rounds.

All four rounds will kill a deer just as the other three. They are so close its really just a personal preference. I have talked with several people though and they say that there is just something about the 308 that make it a deer hunting machine.

Hey, you left out the .243!

No. The best one is the one you have the most confidence in.

.308 in a great hunting round.Comes in a wide variety of off-the-shelf ammo, including low recoil, and high energy/ light mag rounds. Very economical. Very efficiant (size vs energy).

The 30-06 has a slight advantage in that you can shooter heavier bullets. Which you may wantforbig game other than deer. (i.e.-Moose/Grizzly)
Other than that, it is a toss-up.

Good Hunting,

My high school economics teacher Charlie Jeffers was a deer hunting fool and spoke about hunting in our class(a no no in todays public school). He thought the 308 was the greatest deer rifle of all time. He was a very wise man and I think of him often when I do take a deer with a 308.

Nothing wrong with the .308 Win as a deer hunting round at all. Nothing wrong with the others you mentioned either.

Personally I think for an all rounddeer hunting rifle, go witha good shooting7mm-08, 308, 270, 280or 30-06 and you'll be fine. I've shot two deer with my 308 and I was very pleased with it. I'll say the same thing about my 280 too! [/align]
