Remington 597 or a Ruger 10/22

My fiance is wanting to get me something special for our first Christmas together and she has decided to get me a new 22 since my dad took the one he gave me at 15 back last year (he's a funny old man). I am looking between the Remingtom 597 and the Ruger 10/22. I like the versatility of the ruger but he Remington barrel is free floated.

So what do you guys think?

10/22 can't be beat for versitility.

10/22 for sure! you can mod this gun yourself, barrels, stocks, all kinds of stuff for it. not much offered for the rem.

The ruger 10-22 is a LOT better designed as opposed to the remington 597.

I have the 10/22,and I never even considered the Remington.

Accuracy out of the box goes to the remington 597.
Headaches out of the box also goes to remington, though they do make metal magazines now that are supposed to be more reliable- anything that feeds more than 3-4 shots in a row without a jam is better than one of the earlier 597s that I bought.

Best rifle?
Buy a 10/22 and replace all of the Ruger parts with aftermarket parts

For the cost of upgrading the 10/22 from a plinkig rifle to a serious shooter, you might as well buy the semiauto made by TC.

I would get a marlin model 60 before the 597.

Rugers are great guns if you want to play with them.

I was looking at the marlin 60 but that is the one that my father took back after giving it to me 10 years ago (its really just a joke to us). So I wanted something a bit different.

Get the 10/22 i have one and its fully upgradeable well almost but you can make them have a large clip capacity, colored fluted barrel, different stocks scope and everything. they can be used as bench rifles, or hunting rifles theyll do either and both.
