Default Scope power

I'm thinking of putting a 4.5*14 scope on my.300 rum. Do you think it's nessessary or should I just stick with a 3*9 or simaler powered scope?

Easy decision for me.....3-9 variable works well.

I'd stick with the 3-9 I had a rifle that had the 4.5-14 the only time I used more than 9 power was at the rifle range the 14 power would be good for long range open area hunting just my opinion.

I like the higher power scopes. The vision is not as good as it use to be. And for the most part all the 3x9's I have will stay on 5 power while hunting. my2cents 4x14 is not a bad choice. Most anything larger than that is overkill for hunting.

I have 3x10 scopes on my 7mmstw's and 300ultra's and find them fine for all hunting. The higher power scopes can be a problem if game shows up at very close range.

Depends on the environment in which you're hunting. Wooded or bush requires low power with large field of view, ie. 1.5 to 5. Open fields or tree stands maybe 2.5 to 8. Long range 200 to 300 yds plus then 3 to 9 or higher. IMHO. gg.

I'm not sure what make of scope you are refering to ,but if it is a AO scope I don't think I would want it on a hunting rifle . Just not something I would want to have to deal with in a hunting rifle.

A 3 x 9 is a better buy, all other things being equal. there are many cheaper line 4.5 X 14's on the market, but you can get the same clarity for less money in equal quality scopes in the 3 X 9. Unless you are going to go hunting at extreme ranges, and you are an excellent shot way out there, the 3 X 9 wil do you just fine.
