I know a few hunters that use the 300 WM for whitetail. It does the trick but you could go smaller ...

The 300 win mag is overkill on deer-too much recoil.

Too big, no such thing. More than what you need? Deffinately, no doubt about it, waay overkill for deer in most scenerios unless you are talking long range shooting. And then I sitll think a 308, 270 or 30-06 could get the job done if you shoot well enough and know your weapon.

My opinion anyway.

IF you find a .300 Ultra necessary for whitetail, you'll probably need a .50 BMG for elk........

Recoil doesnt bother me. Like I stated before i want something different. Are deer down here are small bodied. I just want something besides a .270.

No such thing as too big. Muzzle loaders use .50 cals, shotgunners use 12 ga. slugs, I've even thought about using the .50 Beowulf for deer.

Yes, we in shotgun only zones use 50-54 cal. ML's and 45 to full bore slugs in shotguns, but at no where near the velocities of a 300 win mag. A muzzle loader or shotgun really doesn't do that much damage, at least not compared to a centerfire.
