Looking for a new gun and I love Remington rifles, so I was looking at Remingtons website andthe 700 SF CDL Stainless in 264 Win Mag catches my eye. Has anybody fired a 264 Win Mag, what is the recoil like? This gun really has my attention, it's purdy and I love guns that look great. Now I just need to know a little more about the round other than it seems to have great ballistics.

In 1960, I built one of the first .264's in Texas using a Mauser action and a 26" Douglas barrel. To begin with, I shot up a box of factory ammo just to get the cases. Up until then (and maybe even up to today) I had never fired any rifle that had the blast, ear-splitting crack, and horrendous muzzle blast as that Win. factory .264 stuff! The fireball at the muzzle of that 26" tube was about the size of a medicine ball!
However, as far as recoil went, it was pretty mild, not much different than a .270 WIN. with 150 grain bullets. The factory stuff was loaded with 140-grain bullets, at a supposed MV of 3200 FPS. We didn't have a chrono available in those days, so never knew about MV. But later, it turned out that with the 140-grain factory ammo, most rifles gave closer to 3000 than 3200....
The .264 is a GREAT long-range deer and antelope rifle. It would also do for larger game with a 160-grain bullet at 2800 FPS. If I were going to shoot whitetails with it, I'd also use the 160grain bullet so there'd be more meat left to eat!
Although both the .264 Win. and the small 6.5's like the 6.5X55, etc., shoot bulllets of the same diameter, that is where the resemblance ends! The .264 is beyond comparison to the little fellows, and it eats barrels for lunch!
