Default Rem 700 safety

I tried out a Rem 700 at the local walmart today and the safety was so loud when pushing it off I thought I broke it.Is this normal ?
Also the safety would only engage with the bolt open. I asked the guy behind the counter but he had no Idea.Is this normal ?

On a Rem 700 the safety will only operate when the gun is cocked. As far as the safety being stiff and loud you can fix that (or at least make it better) by cleaning it really good with solvent, and then put a little grease at the contact points. Work it on and off a lot and it will get better with time.

I have noticed both of my 700s are stiff ,but they make very little noise with the safety going on or off .But with Remington who knows you may have been looking at the new and improved model .<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

I have not played with the Klintoon keyed versions that much. just picked one up and looked and put it down.
But i don't know why they would make it so the safety would only engage with the bolt open?
Some old ones you couldnt open the bolt with the safety off.
I am afraid the anti's have scared remington so much they are going to safety themselves right out of business!that and poor quality!

That said and i love remingtons 700's! all older!!! no new stuff!!

I have not experienced a lot of noise working any Remington safety...need to clean out the trigger group with solvent and then spray it with Remoil where indicated and it should work smoothly. If it doesn't call Remington Customer Disservice that is where the fun starts...
