Default Hornaday SST Slug Question?

These new slugs look amazing, and are supposed to be accurate out to 200 yards with a shotgun, which if true is.... WOW!!!!

My question is there are 2 boxes, one of them says CUSTOM on the box, the other says RIFLED BARREL ONLY....Is the CUSTOM box for smooth bore barrels? Thanks forany info.

Default RE: Hornaday SST Slug Question?

ALL SST "slugs" are actuallyHornady SST BULLETS, loaded into plastic sabots of essentially the same kind as are used to shoot those same type of bullets from muzzleloading rifes. The main difference is that the sabots made to hold the bullets inshotrgun ammo have an outside diameter that fits the shotgun bore.

Since elongated bullets require a spin to remain stable and fly point-forward, all such "slug" loads MUST be fired in a rifled bore.

(I just went to the Hornady site and looked at the ballistics of those loads. VERY impressive! Much more power than needed for just deer. Those would work well on elk or moose too, maybe even big bears! I may have to buy a rifled shotgun!)

I have also noticed this on the box. I dont think that there is a difference but I could be wrong.

i am not sure but they are very accurate, off hand and about 100 yards i think i hit about 1-1.5 inches to the left maybe less, and i dont shoot that much and that was the first time i shot it also.

It all depends on how they shoot in your gun. Ammo companies can't really make accuracy claims for a particular load, it's gun specific in most cases. And slug guns tend to be even more picky than rifles. Most rifled slug barrels out right now tend to not like the faster loadings so the only way you will know is to try it. And you need to try it at that distance. Don't just assume that because it shoots well at 75 or 100 yards it will at 200. Accuracy for slugs can fall off very fast sometimes. What shoots great at 100 yards may be horrible at 150 and 200 yards.

I have heard good things about these loads though, and Hornady makes some quality consistent ammo. Let us know how they work and out of what gun if you try them.

Paul
