Default One gun question

Here in Finland on similar page than this, is going on an conversation about the case that if the world should fall apart, what would be the one gun a man should have?
Many people has recommended pistol or revolver like .357mag or .44 mag,but is rifle/shotgun more preferrable on scenario like that?
The law here don't allow to hunt with handguns (pistol or revolver) in her,so there is no knowledge about how they will work for hunting.
So i'd like to know what you think about it?

You'll get a ton of different opinions. I'd probably take a 12 gauge shotgun. It would be great for taking game with the appropriate slugs or shot and it's a pretty good defense weapon as well.

One gun only as a survival weapon, the 12 ga. is my top pick. If I could add a rifle for a second gun it would be a mauser action 308.

It seem's that opinion turns to 12 gauge.I'd bet on longarms myself, but on that page about 50% of folks say for some reason that their choise would be a handgun.Maybe it's experiences on shooting range, that you can hit just about anything with revolver. And my quess is that many of them are not hunters.
But i'd like to thank everyone who bothered to answer to my question.

I`ll take a .22 rimfire.. light, accurate, cheap to shoot, you can carry 1000 rounds with little effort

My choice would be the 22 magnum. The rifle would be the ruger 96/22magnum with a peep sight and a couple of extra clips.
