Default 270 shooting high

Anyone got any input on this one. I was looking at buying a Husqvarna 270 off a neighbor and he said go ahead and borrow it for this deer season. It was his father in-laws and he's never shot it. I like the gun, very smooth action. I bought a couple of boxes of Fed 140 Gr Accubond and took it to the range. It has an (appears) original Redfield 4X scope on it. I sighted it in at 3 high at 100 yds. I shot consistently and I was pretty pleased. On the way to our hunting unit my friend and I stopped at the DoW range to let his kids take a few more practice shots and I wanted to see what the 270 would do at 200 yds. We both were scratching our heads because the 270 was printing almost 6" high at 200 yds. It was barely hitting the top of the paper. Group was consistent and I was 99% sure that I was taking a good shot. It has a nice trigger pull and shoots really smoothly. We could only come to the conclusion that the scope was jacked up. Needless to say I was looking for 100 yd shots on this trip just to play it safe. We tested this twice and go the same results. I didn't adjust the scope any more for fear of becoming inaccurate at 100 yds.

Any ideas if this is really the scope or is it the gun? Should I buy this gun or just walk away? Right now I'm looking at about $300 for the gun, which wouldn"™t be bad if it's just the scope. I would have replaced it anyway.

Hope you all can help.

Did you re-check your 3'' high zero at 100 yards to make sure it had not moved???

Did you double check all the mounting screws on the scope bases and rings???

A new scope of greater quality, and higher power is always nice, but it may not be needed.

my guess is the scope or base has been shimmed, even sighted in dead on at 200 it should only be a shade less than 6" low at 275, and 1.25" high at 100.husky's are nice rifles, have read about that action being used for 1k benchrest work. buy the rifle if you like it, you can always fix where and how it hits.

It can be 1 of only 3 things. Scope mount/ring loose, scope itself defective,or the wood forend has warped to put upward pressure on barrel.

If the price is right it's easy enough to cure the sighting problem.[1]Get rid of any aluminum mts/rings.[2]get rid of scope[3] buy steel rings and mts[4]install a 3x9 Leupold and you'll be invincible.Beautiful rifles with old world craftsmanship.................Don't cut corners on optics or mts.....Harold

Thanks for the info guys. I did reshoot at 100 yds and it was shooting at same place as before. I did not go over every screw but I did check the solidness of the scope on a couple of occassions and didn't find any looseness at all. The blueing is pretty much gone on all parts, the stock appears to be retrofitted, has inlaid white diamond shapes and a deer silohett (not my thoughts on a pretty stock), has a crackat the forend (appears to be still free floating) and numberous scratches.I'm thinking that I can get it for around$300, but would like lower, of course.I like the rifle but for $300, then a new scope ($200 at least, unless I goe-bay) and possibly a new stock ($????) I'm not sure that I shouldn't just go and buy a savage package new off the shelf ora Tikka.I like the fact that it has some history to it, but it's still a gun probably bought before 1959 that I'd have to put some money in to. Not sure that I won't be better off getting a good new rifle (browning or Tikka) that I know I can hand down to my son.

Please let me know if anyone has anymore thoughts or suggestions.

Might not be anything wrong. Fed 140 Accubonds list a MV of 2950fps. Sierra Exterior ballistics shows a 140gr SBT bullet that hits 5.3" high at 200 will be zero at 300 and +4.4" at 100. If your 3" was 3.3 or so and you +6 was 5.5" you're probably pretty close. How high is the scope mounted above the bore? If it's set up high, the barrel has to angle up fairly steep to intersect the line of sight in the scope. So the bullet hits +3" at 100 yds and keeps going up.

With my 270 I sight in at 100 yards no more than 2 inches high. A 270 shoots so darned flat that even if I have to take a 200 or 300 yard shot I can just aim higher or lower on the animal depending on its distance to get a clean kill. Most shots for me are under 100 yards anyhow though. Did you try any different ammo?
