Default 270wsm or 25-06

I am thinking about a new gun and really havnt bought into the short action craze but the ballistics on the 270wsm look pretty good just trying to decide between the two. It appears the 270wsm is a little faster with a 130 grain than the 25-06 with a 100grain what do ya all think?

I have a 270wsm and I like it. Haven't had the chance to take it on a hunt yet, bought it for next year, to give me time to get familiar with it. If you think you'll have the need for the heavier rounds I'd say go for it. Out of curiosity, why aren't you also looking at the standard 270?

The only downside so far is ammo availability. You might have to work a little to find what you're looking for. Hopefully that'll improve.

mike...The 25-06 has been around a long time and very accurate and flat shooting. Recoil will be less than the .270 WSM,why burn more powder than you need? I looked at the new &quot;short-fat&quot; mags and I'll stay with regular ones if I want a mag...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

If it would me a one all around rifle, I would opt for the 270 SM the ballistics do look interesting. I don,t think it will do much that the 270 Win won,t do but I can see a little gain in useful range. If you already have a bigger rifle then the 25-06 would get my vote. I must admit though to being kind of a quarter bore nut. For just deer and pronghorn I like my wife,s 250-3000 and I shoot a 257 Roberts as well. All my life I have wanted a 257 Weatherby Mag. I have been thinking of getting a left hand 7mm mag and rebarreling it to 257 Weatherby.

I can outshoot the 25-06 with my 300 wsm with factory ammo 150 grain silvertips... with a lot less barrel wear and match it to more animals than you can with the 25-06. I am betting the 270wsm is going to easily match advertised velocities and be a better all around gun also. Based on what I have seen at the local gun shops and my not so local bassproshop these short mags are here to stay....

Mike - I don't know what you plan on using the rifle for, but if you're looking for a great long-range deer gun that can go heavier if you need it, look no farther than the .270 WSM. While I don't have one, I do have a .270 Wby Mag, and while the WSM isn't quite that powerful, it is pretty darn close. I am here to tell you that a hunter in North America who does not hunt grizzly needs nothing more than a .270 Wby Mag. That thing has literally hammered elk for me, including one 5x5 at 325 yards, quartering toward me, that took the 150gr Partition on the front shoulder (destroyed), took out a portion of the heart, both lungs, and exited the size of a half-dollar between the last two ribs on the other side of the bull. It sprayed lung matter 3-4' behind the bull, but of course you don't need a blood trail when the game dies in its tracks.

It is also a superlative long-range deer cartridge, with my longest shot being just over 375 yards on a feeding 4x4 muley buck who was standing broadside. The 150gr Partition absolutely dissolved both shoulders and left a nice exit wound (although it wasn't needed: the buck dropped in his tracks). Also, I did not hold over on that buck...now that's flat-shooting!

That being said, even though the .270 WSM is about 200+fps behind the Weatherby round, it should serve you nearly as well.

One other thing to ponder: There really is nothing a .25-06 Rem can do that a .270 Win cannot. However, the .270 WSM was designed to outperform the .270 Win, and it does so by a noticeable margin.

I'm starting to get on board with the 270WSM as well, won't do much my 30-06 won't, but that isn't the point. I'm thinking sako or tikka, not sure if they are out yet topped with a leupold or zeiss...
Good luck...
