I know nothing about air rifles, but I am extremely interested in picking up a Gamo Hunter Extreme... I hear it shoots a .177 pellet at 1650 fps, and would like to know more about this gun or others you would recomend.... Is Gamo a good company to go with? I've heard this gun is extremely capable of killing coons and coyotes if their close enough,,,,,,, is that true?????? It sounds capable, but is it????????????????????

If your going to target shoot only get the .177 caliber. If your going to shoot small game get the .22 caliber air rifle. Even if the .22 has a slower velosity, it packs a much harder punch. I recently purchased a RWS 34 Panther (see attached link) and I am very happy with it. Get a good quality scope made for air guns, because air guns have a different type of recoil than a standard rifle. I got a Centerpoint and am happy with it too. The RWS has a lifetime warranty.
The .22 should handle coons, but I would not suggest an air rifle for coyotes.

They actually shoot closer to 1250 fps but they are good guns. Though I wouldn't recommend using they for coyotes. I use mine for squirrel hunting and it works great.

Yes, I've never tried the new pellets though I heard they work good. I have a RWS similar to the rifle you are looking at and it is a lot of fun to play with.

The difference in the new gamo pellets is that they are lighter. They will make any air rifle shoot faster by 200-350 fps as opposed to conventional lead pellets. they are also harder so you can expect more penetration even tho they will have less kinetic energy due to less expansion or deformation.
I believe that gamo to be equal to more expensive rws even tho rws used to own gamo. This is based on side by side comparsions.

Well i went with the Gamo Hunter Extreme, purchased it at the new Cabelas in Indiana..... Wow,,,,,, I took it in my backyard and put 2 sheets of 3/4'' plywood back to back and put a target on it. Then i shot at it, whoa, it made a sound similar to a .22 cal. rimfire I was shocked, then i looked at the target and had seen it blew through both sheets of plywood, that's when I realized its definately not like the kind of pellet gun I had as a kid.......................definately not a backyard pellet gun unless you want to be visited by your local police department!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Gamo rifles come up often on the Small Game, Predator and Trapping forum. I reckon you should have luck. Any projectile moving fast enough will cause a sonic "kee-rack" while above the speed of sound. The other piece is, the powerful spring by itself makes a hunting air rifle pretty noisy. But in many places it is less of a legal hassle than a powder rifle.
Did some air rifle hunting as a young man. Definitely would not use it on something as big as yotes. Rabbits & squirrels, no problem.
