Default Mossberg 835 question...

I own a Mossberg 835 the model you buy at Academy. It's the model 68040 from academy. My question is can you shoot rifled slugs from it? I have been told since it is an overbored barrel you can not shoot slugs of any type through it. I am curious so I can decide if I should go ahead and cough up the cash for a slug barrel or not for this deer season.

If I do have to get a slug barrel what are the pros and cons between a rifled bore and cylinder bore barrel?

Any information would be great and thanks again.

Typically in the 835 series, the barrels are overbored. The manual that came with the one that I had stated to NOT shoot slugs through the barrel, unless you specifically had the slug barrel for it.

Hmm yeah just read that on their website.. Couldn't find where I put the manual so had to do some research..

I guess my question is this the cylinder bore barrel they sell that runs around $120 will it shoot rifled slugs fine and can you shoot regular shot shells from it? Primary use will be on the occasion I hunt deer in an area where you have to use a shotgun slug and not a rifle.

I don't see why it wouldn't shoot regular shotshells through it. To me, it would function like the other brand of shotguns that don't overbore their barrels. I can tell you that my 835 overbored barrel patterned much better than any other shotgun that I've used. I'm not a gunsmith, nor do I know alot about the science of barrels - but the results were on target for me.

Federal #5's in the 3 and 1/2" sizewould produce the most dense pattern out of all the brands of shotshells the at I tried. They would also produce thebiggest "ouch factor" as well.

Yeah so far I have shot Remington Sure shot and some Feds out of mine with great success. I love this shotgun and the kick is so minimal especially compared to my rifle and other shotguns I have shot. Shoots solid and is here to stay. Just need a barrel I can shoot slugs from without breaking the bank and having my resident bank make me sleep with the dogs..

No slugs through a 835 barrel, it is backbored, backboring does the same thing as choking, just instead of making the bore tighter, it gives the same "ckoke" effect as making the muzzle smaller.

my 835 on the left side of the barrel about 2 inches from the reciever the phrase 'Not for use with slugs' is clearly written on the barrel.

Get the rifled slug barrel with the integral scope mount. I have one and it shoots sub 2" groups at 100 yards.
