Default .22 semiautomatic

looking to pick up a .22 for plinking, target practice, etc. assuming after market modifications are not an issue (other than a trigger job), any recommendations out there for decent accuracy right out of the box? specifically, how does the remington 597 stack up (particularly against the ruger 10/22)?

I never shot the Rem. 597 so I can't give you a comparison between that and the 10/22, but besides the 8lb trigger pull the 10/22 is a good little gun. After market parts for the Ruger are easy to find so modifications are only limited by your bank account.

I will throw my hat in for the marlin model 60. I have also shot the 10/22 and both are nice rifles, I think the marlin is a little cheaper though. I have no experience with the 597.

The Remington 597 is a gun that never should have been. To say the least it is almost as big a piece of junk as the 710. I had one and ended up throwing it away. The thing constantly jammed, the trigger was about 12 lbs and felt like sand, and it was inaccurate and not very well put together. I would go with a Marlin or a Ruger if you want a semiauto.

Stay away from the Remington 597. I've never owned one and never will. From previous posts on this board and others it leaves allot to be desired.Along with Remington's better idea the 710.The Marlin/Glenfield model 60 has been around for a long time.I saw allot of them with problems when I worked for at a gun shop. The main problem was they needed to be kept clean.Like all semi's cleaning is important to function properly. The Ruger 10/22 is one of the most reliable 22 semi auto on the market. There are so many after market accessories, you can make a very accurate rifle.I would recommend the 10/22 over the others you mentioned.

Are you restricting your choices to semi's or would you consider a bolt action? How about a Ruger 77/22? IMHO it's one fine rifle!

I guess I got lucky when I bought my 597. It is the best semi-auto 22 I have owned.And I have owned several 10/22's and 1 Marlin.
Never had a malfunction and at fifty yrds. you can empty the clip and cover the holes with a dime.(cheap Winchester ammo)
The Marlin would be my second choice.

Go with the 10/22 over model 60 mainly because it has detachable mags, and alot of after market accesories. The remington 597 is crap.

Go to the store and look at a 10/22 and a 597 side by side. Then grab the bolt tab on the 597 and pull it right out of the gun, only held in by tension. This would piss me off royally if that happened while I was hunting. Then try to pull something off the ruger. You will see why the 10/22 is better. Second there are more after market accessories for the 10/22 than any other gun that I can think of. The thousands of people shooting them for competition can't be wrong. Go with the 10/22, simple as that. Or better yet the 10/22 mag or 10/17 if you want. I had a 10/22 mag and it was an awsome nighttime predator rifle. shot great and never had a malfunction.
