Default .30-30 strong enough?

is a .30-30 150gr strong enough to take downa bear around 300lbs, if i have to i can hit it in te head out to 25yds(as far as shots get this time of year)

i have my browning bar .30-06, but its pretty heavy and a pain in the neck to carry through the thick woods. thats why i bought the winchester.

I am not a bear hunter and have no first hand experience, but I have killed hogs up to 250 lbs with no trouble with my 30-30. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a 300 lb animal with my 30-30, but I would definitely use Hornady LeverEvolutions.

It depends on how far away you are planning on being when you shoot.

It'll do just fine, but I would personally go for 160 or 170gr.

The 30-30 Win. has killed plenty of black bear. For one thing, black bear just aren't that tough to kill when hit right at reasonable ranges. It'll do a fine job, if you do yours..........

Why wouldn't you use a heavier grain bullet than a 150gr? I've never shot a bear but I imagine you'll want the heaviest bullet you can put in that gun which I believe is 170gr. Especially since you only plan on shooting in the 25-50 yard range.

Also don't shoot an animal in the head. That is a bad choice, generally.

A 150 grain bullet will work just fine as long as it is of a good design and holds together. I wouldn't expect as quick of a kill however compared to the 30-06 due to energy and velocity.

It certainly is! I am aware of a number of grizzly bearsa that weighed a lot more than 300 pounds which were killed qwith a .30-30. It is plenty for any blackie. Just place the shots right. I would suggest the use of 170-grain ammo, Nosler Partitions if you can get them.

the .30-30 has taken more game than any other cartirdge I'd think. it's quite capable. the game haven't gotten any tougher the last 100 years.

Actually, with all the old timers here, I would be interested in knowing the biggest beast they have dropped with this cartridge. Never owned a rifle in 30-30 myself, but I have been looking at some pre-64 winchesters.
