The other day I was cruzeing around a gun and pawn shop and saw a springfield xd in .45 acp. it had a case and a factory holster & all the goodies.

well I was thinking that it would be to small to take w/ me on deer hunts. or self defence from the hogs (they all over the conservation land, and will attach you if they can get to you).

so whats a big enough cal. to take deer with? what distance am i looking at here? where does the prices fall (ball park)? thanks all, I appreciate the help I get from this site.

Wow.. deer hunting with a .45 acp. Will it kill a deer? Sure... The precision of the weapon and round is not what I would consider good enough to hunt with, not to mention the .45 acp won't have the range of other cartridges. It would be fine for personal protection though. You might want to consider a revolver chambered in .357 or larger with a barrel length about 5 inches or longer, or even a T/C pistol. I think those would better suit your needs for a hunting pistol for deer. You should be able to get into an iron sighted .357 or larger revolver for around $350-400 (I like Rugers personally, but S&W, Taurus, Colt all have fine offerings that could fit the bill for you), and work your way up from there. The only question left is how much do you want to pay to play? Good luck.

If you get a .45 cor bon has jhp 165gr that hits with 576 foot lbs. I would call that more than enough.

I am real partial to Ruger Single Actions for the money, using a 45 Colt 4&5/8" barrel (fun!!) and a Super Blackhawk in 44 Maggie. The magnums work just so much faster, and while hunting, you don't have to worry about recoil recovery time. I have had trigger work done on my Rugers. SA's also seem to dampen recoil for me. Even my daughters will fire the 44 Maggie.

I have an XD 45...it's the best pistol I've owned (and I own numerous). I don't think you will be disappointed. The XD also comes in a sub-compact, but I prefer the 4".

I got a springfield XD in .45 acp. its a blast. I think its a way better deal than going with the glocks. this pistol comes w/ acc. right out of the box while the glocks were more $$$ but were bare and plain models.
this was the "tacktical" model so it should have the 5" barrel on it. only one gripe, this type of pistol needs a longer grip. it seems to small, the pinky finger feels like it has no place to go on the grip. maybe there is an extended mag. that has a piece of grip on it to get me the extention. I think ive seen those around.
now looking at the balistics more carefully i think the .40 s&w will push a 200 grain bullet a bit faster. in the hornaday re-loading book it showed the .40 s&w a lot more north of 1,000 FPS. but looking around for .40 s&w ammo and itsprimarely non existant. so maybethe .45 was the right pick.

id still like to get a big cal. revolver for hunting use. there is a lot of brush in some of the hunting spots so range there will be limited, perfect spot for a pistol hunt.
is a .357 really plenty on deer?? I was thinking the 44 mag or.480rugerwould be the good cartriges.

Be sure you game regs permit it! Col requires min energy requirements. 44 mag does meet them.
