Default Gun advice - Hog Butchering

Hey all,

My cousin approached me today. He wants to butcher a 300 pound domestic hog. The thing that concerns me is he wants to put it down with a 45 black powder revolver. Now I grew up on a hog farm and have helped butcher over 30 hogs. We always used a 22LR to the head and then stuck them. I'm concerned of penetration problems through the hog's skull. Am I gonna have a big f-in mess on my hands if I listen to him, or am I worrying about nothing. By the way, I have a 22lr and a 22 mag we could use.

Thanks,

KEJ

I have killed fifty or so hogs with the 22 LR over the years. Also some 1200 lb steers.

Why would you change what you KNOW works? If your cousin insists on using the 45 black powder gun, I'd make darn sure he was totally responsible for any "mis-cues" and appropriate follw-up on his part.

That .45 caliber slug could easily end up in the hogs shoulder, ruining a lot of meat.

Dont need any .45 caliber anything. Just shoot it in the head with a .22.

If you're worried then shoot it broadside in the headwith something bigger. Not black powder lol what a joke.

You can kill a 2000 pd bull if you hit it in the forehead with a hammer blow!.....Pop it in the forehead with the .22LR

Why can't he shoot it in the head with the .45?

Follow your instinct, go with the 22lr. Enough power without making a mess...
