According to the Indiana DNR, the following are legal:

Quote:

Rifles with pistol cartridges that fire a bullet of .357-inch diameter or larger; have a minimum case length of 1.16 inches; and have a maximum case length of 1.625 inches are legal to use only during the deer firearms season. Some cartridges legal for deer hunting include the 357 Magnum, 38-40 Winchester, 41 Magnum, 41 Special, 44 Magnum, 44 Special, 44-40 Winchester, 45 Colt, 454 Casull, 475 Linebaugh, 480 Ruger, 50 Action Express, and 500 S&W.

I'd take a look at the Marlin lever action 1894, chambered in 44 Magnum. If semi-autos are legal in IN, Ruger makes a nice, handy 44 mag.

I would probably go with one of the rossi/puma .454Casull, as it is about the most potent pisol cal levergun you will find which gives you decent power and fast followups
I agree- (nothing less than a 44 Mag.)

What do they consider a pistol cartridge?

A TC encore pistol can be bought in 300 win mag. It is a pistol and is so chambered so is that a pistol cartridge?

Or does it have to be a cartridge originally developed and chambered in pistols? If so then I would get a handi-rifle or TC encore in 500 S&W or 460 S&W.

Take a look at the definition I posted earlier. There are limitations on case length which eliminate rifle cartridges chambered inTC or other pistols.

the best is an AR-15 chambered in 458 SOCOM, its a ballistic twin of the 45/70 and it meets the criteria to be indy legal. A 300 gr HP at 2200 fps, I use one for bear hunting and have taken several bucks with it, its a literal "sledgehammer" on game.

If they pass this law in lower Michigan I will own a marlin in 44 mag before that season.

I would go with the 44 Mag in the Marlin Model 1894. I have one and have taken several deer with it. If you want to save some money the NEF Handi Rifle is available in 44 Mag for just over 200 bucks. I also own one of these. Its a good shooter and can be reamed to 445 Super Mag pretty cheap. Being a rimmed cartridge it works very well in the Handi rifle. Also for about a hundred bucks you can add more barrels to it.
