Default How do you keep the guns in your safe dry?

Just recently moved to Indiana from a far less humid place and am now super concerned with getting rust on my guns as they sit in the safe. I take good care of them, but was looking for something to put in the safe to help reduce the humidity. The safe is pretty small, only 8 or 9 cubic feet.

I use both silica and heating rods. I also use silicon gun socks on nice guns. Kinda has a dual purpose. Keep em dry plus from getting beat up in the safe.

I use the heating rods in my safes, just plug them in and your good to go. I also spray down my firearms with G-96 gun treatment.

I really like the silicon gun socks as well. I just keep a small light bulb in the gun closet. Humidity is not a real problem here as a rule.

I keep a dehumidifier near the safe set at 55% humidity. And coat the guns with a light layer, do you think that's sufficient, or should I still buy a heating rod or....?

I've used a "Goldenrod" heating rod in my safe for years and I've never had a rust problem, and I also live in an area with lots of trees, shrubs, and a woodsy atmosphere. Lots of "damp". I have to run a de-humidifier in the basemaent all summer. It has worked well for me.

I can undrstand your concern, having lived in Indianapolis for a couple of years. Now, here in S. central PA, it is just about as bad humidity-wise. I keep one of those Brownell's canisters of silica-gel in my gun safe. The steel parts of all guns are wiped liberally with Birchwood-Casey SHEATH, which absolutely prevented my guns from rusting while hunting in coastal Alaska, the very worst place in the world for gun rust! Next,I put them in one of those silicone-impregnated "GUN SOCKS",, "Sack-Ups",or whatever you call them that come from WALMART or Cabela's.

I have had NO RUST yet on any gun so protected, here or in upstate New York (Syracuse area), the cloudiest, rainiest, snowiest place in the lower 48, (worse than Seattle WA!!)where I lived for 12 years before coming here......... GET YOURSELF SOME SHEATH!! (NO! I don't own any Birchwood-Casey stock! But that stuff works. There may be other stuff that's just as good. I don't know. Why mess with success?)
