Default .308 factory ammo for bear.

Hey guys I want to open a can of worms here. I just purchased a used Rem. 742 in .308 for the wife to hunt bear in Canada. I know the .308 is one of the most versatile cartridges ever developed, but I would like some of your humble opinions on what factory bullet would perform well on black bear under 100 yards. Shots would most likely be more like 50 yds. I would like a few choices to buy to shoot thru this gun and see which it prefers. Thanks alot for any help you can give.

me personally, from what I have read, think that .308 might be a little light for bears. But I don't know for sure
I am sure you will get some mixed thoughts in here though. Good luck getting the info you need

any 165 or 180 gr partition type bullet will work perfectly under the conditions you describe.
many of the people i bear hunt with use a 308 with host of different bullets. a 308 at 50 - 100 yards will put a 300+ pound black bear down quickly.

Get yourself a Marlin 1895G *scoped* and load it up with Garrett [font="arial, helvetica, sans-serif"]540-GR SUPER-HARD-CAST GAS-CHECKED HAMMERHEAD Bullets AT 1550-FPS. You should be OK, then.

Bear+.308+100 yards= dead bear. any bullet made for the 308 would kill a bear a 50 yards.

Sounds like your hunting over a baited site with shoots at 100 yards or less. The 308 would work great in that setup, as it will kill any black bear around at those ranges. I like the 165's as that's what my gun likes the best, just stick with a good bullet no matter what grain you go with and you'll be fine.

On second thought, it's to small and you really should get rid of it! I'll do you a favor and buy it off your hands cheap![8D]

Just joking, it's fine! Good luck on the bear hunt!!!

My brother has a .308 that gets more velocity (when reloaded)withboth 150 gr or 165gr bullets than my 30-06 using the same amount of powder and same primers..
We have never compared commercial ammo
And according to Speer (cause I phoned them) this isn't a surprise..
Aparantly Theyget alot of calls..
Cosidering this cal. is very very accurate using a wide variety of commercial ammo, (more so than the 3006) Its plenty for game out to 400yrds.
165 GR TBBC . 165 PARTITIONS, 165 TSX...
