Default 35 Whelen

I am looking at one here locally, Built on Mauser action. What do you guys think of the caliber? Who has one, What's the recoil like, what do you shoot in it, what range does it have?

I can read charts, I want to know what practical field experience has shown.

Thanks in advance,

Dryridge

I love this caliber. More than needed for deer, but thumps Moose pretty good. Recoil isn't bad at all IMO, a bit more than a 06' maybe, but nothing serious. I keep shots under 250...but you could probably extend that a bit, I'm just not comfortable shooting farther.

It's a great round! You could hunt any animal in North America and not be undergunned. Load it with 180's and you have a great deer gun. Saw my dad shoot a whitetail at 300 yards with one a few years back. Not saying it's a good long range gun, as it's not. But if needed it can reach to 300, but that is about tops for it. Really should keep them under 250. Like KonaBoy said, it's about like an 06 far as recoil goes. Buy it, you'll love it!!!

Glad to see others with interest in the 35 Whelen. My son-in-law and I are having a 35 Whelen A.I. built off of a VZ24 mauser action, a Wilson barrel and Boyds stock. We wanted something with a near-magnum punch but not the recoil of one. We also wanted something to handle 225-275 gr bullets. Really looking forward to getting it.

I had a 35 whelen built up for my dad a couple of years ago and it has been a very good rifle. The whelen is an outstanding all around big game rifle from deer to brown bear. Loaded with 200gr bullets for deer, and 250s for anything bigger.
