any info on the 257wby mag. ??

I am considering getting a 257wby mag. for a deer and javalinarifle to use primarly herein the southwest where I currently live. I have heard very good reviews aboutit thus far with the excepton of the cost of ammo. However I would probably only shoot about 3-4 boxes a year, at most. Does anyone have any info of other ideas for me? I would have to get a vanguard in the weatherby because being a full time Firefighter I am on a budget.

For "your" purpose, the 25-06 will do the same thing the 257 wby. will, and end up costing you a lot less... You will be able to afford more ammo for it, to get in more practise!

Other than the .300 WBY Mag, The .257 WBY Magnum is the only Weatherby chambering offered in the Vanguard which is an outstanding rifle at a very reasonable price. Getting this unique chambering in a Vanguard seems like to good of an opportunity to pass up. If you get the .257 WBYyou will be glad you did years from now.

I can tell you that even though the $ of ammo is high. This is one heck of a long range deer cartridge. A few years ago my cousin had a gun shop and just before deer season he was busy and asked if I would mind sighting in his 257 WBY for him. (Foolish question). When I got it to the range it only took me a couple of shots to sight it in for him. I then proceeded to take out the 500 meter ram and 300 meter pig shillouettswe had there. What a hoot to shoot. Recoil as I remember wasn't bad. He was a bit upset when I handed him the empty ammo box. He is in a wheel chair and hunts a pole line. He ended up dropping a nice buck a few days later at about 350 yds.

The cartridge is extremely flat shooting. I have owned two of them. I got rid of both of them. I do not think the bullets were designed for the higher velocities. I will also admit that I refuse to pay $30 or more for so called "premium" bullets. I shoot too much. I shot about a dozen deer with mine. I was disappointed with the results on deer. But I will admit that I prefer a 30 caliber for deer. I will also admit that one of the best, if not the best deer hunter I know swears by the 257 Wby. He has killed a bunch of deer with his. But like me, he aims for the shoulder. And he shoots the heavier bullets for caliber.

The cartridge would make a fantastic varmintround. But you said deer. I agree with the other guys about the 25-06. With current bullet design I think the 25-06 is a better choice for deer.

Guys get on me when I post badly about a particular cartridge. But I am not being paid by anyone, and I write about my own personal experience, not some one else's.

I think you should try one of these. It is a true long range caliber. But I will admit that it takes a tad bit more practice. Tom.

Both the .257Roy and the 25-06 are fantastic deer choices. The Wby has a 150-200fps advantage w/ common bullet weights when fitted w/ a 26" tube, but the Vanguard has a 24" bbl regardless of caliber so the advantage would probably closer the 100-150fps. I'd buy the 06', but you would be happy with the Roy as well if you don't mind paying twice to 3 times as much for ammo. Brett

Don't shoot anything you plan to eat under 300 yards with that cartridge. Especially not javelina. It will blow a javelina to bits!
