Default Improving my groups: Part II

Went to Sportsman's Warehouse yesterday and compared three scopes. The Sightron SII, the Bushnell 3200, and the Nikon Buckmasters all in 3-9x40. Even though I had read great things about the Sightron, it easily looked the worse. The Bushy and Nikon were pretty even but I gave the nod to the Nikon. It seemed to be a smidge clearer and also had the BDC reticle.

I got it mounted with Burris rings and headed to the range. Trying to get it on target my shots with the cheap Remington UMC ammo were still all over the place. I decided to switch to the Hornady ammo and things looked better. I got it pretty close to the bullseye and then shot a three shot group. 3/8" CTC. Wow, what a difference! It was already getting dark so I was able to shoot anymore. I hope that wasn't just afluke. More range time tomorrow. Coyotes here I come.

One thing I do is make sure I sight in with what I'll be hunting with. It just kills me to see guys with 2 or three different brands of slugs in their hand walking out the door on opening morning. And some of these guys have hunted longer than I have. I buy my ammo in large enough quanities it last me through a couple of years hunting. I also go as far as open the boxes at the store and check lot numbers on the boxes. 3/8 of a inch is pretty darn good, what yardage was you shooting?

I sight in using my favorite hunting load, then I shoot some groups with alternates. I record the difference in elevation and keep that with me just in case. So far I haven't used it; I just like to see how well I can group compensating for the different ballistics.

I forgot to mention the range, it was at 100 yards.

I plan to only hunt with one load and set my rifle up with that and then stock up like you did!
