Default Carabine 30 US M1

I have a 1942 Carabine 30 US M1 with 15 and 30 round mags.

Can i use .280 ammo in this gun without modifications ? I understand the case is almost identicle.

Thanks
Paul

NO!

Are you sure you don't have your rifles and/or calibers confused? I don't know of any .280 cartridge that iseven vaguely similar in dimensions to the .30 Carbine cartridge. Thecaliber typically known as a .280 is a necked down version of the .30-06 which is used in the M1 Garand.

When you buy a rifle, shoot the cartridge it is chambered for!

Iwould never mix ammo.

Even using a .38 in a .357 seems weird to me.

if you can get 280 ammo in the mag and get the mag inserted, go ahead and shoot it!

the safest way is to look on the gun itself and find it engraved then look on the primer end of the cartridge.

in fact...

it's the only way to tell.

Ha...Ha...Ha...Good luck getting the .280 Remington to even FIT in the M1 carbine mags much less the chamber! The cases are not "almost identical" one is a straight wall case (.30 carbine) and the other if indeed you are talking about the .280 Remington is a bottle neck case.

Either you are a troll or are very much mistaken as to the weapon you have.

well call me a troll, but if he buys a box of 280 ammo, it will be pretty obvious that it in no way will fit in a 30 carbine mag
30 carbine COL w/110 gr hornady 1.680
280 rem COL w/100 gr JHP 3.180
He has to have a 30 carbine since he has 15 and 30 round mags, and even if it were an 06, a 280 will not chamber in it due to the shoulder length being longer for that exact purpose.
If anyone doesn't understand how to safely load and operate a firearm, they shouldn't have it, or at least get training beforehand. I know the forum is here to help others learn, but lets say he tried it, and went out and spent 25 bucks for a box of cartridges that were of no use, then maybe, just maybe he would research how to tell what ammo he could safely use
