Default .17 or .204

I'm lookin to buy a varmint rifle and somethin to shoot target with. What are your opinions on a .17 and a .204? Does any company make a centerfire .17 other than Remington? Thanks for ya'll help.

I'm more of a budget minded 22LR and 223. Price and cheap surplus availability. Paper doesnt know the difference between a 204 or a 223.

I have a 204 and it is a great rifle. Its a CZ 527 American. It is very accurate.

What do you hunt with your .204 or is it your target gun?

It would work great for any Varmint i bought it as a Coyote gun.. We go to a Coyote tournament every year so i got it for that but other then that its a target gun. Im going to try to take it out for groundhogs and im definately taking it for fall turkey. I can keep groups under 1in at 200 yards with a 10-15mph wind.

I forgot to add this is with a completely stock gun that i payed $600 for the gun, scope, and 2 boxes of ammo. I just got groups with the second box of ammo. Im going to try different brands and bullet weights to see what groups best. I have a pic or two of when i tryed to get groups with it if you would like to see how it shoots.

Another vote for 223. Next choice is 204

Comparing the 17 Rem. Fireball and the 204 Ruger for punching paper at 100 - 200 yards is pointless. The 17 drops .2in more at 200 yards with a 150 yard zero. I think the wind will effect the 17 bullet like it dose the 17 HMR. A 17 HMR is usless past 125 yards if there is a good wind. Other then that for punching paper they are very close. When it comes to hunting with it i like that the 204 has more knockdown power. At the muzzel its over 500 ft.lbs. of energy more and even at 400 yards it still has 100 ft.lbs. of energy more then the 17. If you ust want to punch paper it wont really make a difference which one you chose. For punching paper you could get a 22 Mag and it would be just as good as either of these. For hunting i like the 204's knockdown power over the 17 for coyotes.
