Default Help me, .270 or 30-06

Here's the situation I'm faced with. I'm going to be purchasing a Remington 700 ADL really soon, but I'm uncertain which caliber would suit me best. One area where I'll be hunting has a decent amount of brush, but still has some long range shots. The other area is mainly a field which connects to a stretch of woods. I have no clue which one to get, I'm sure either one would be fine but I was just looking for some feedback. Thanks for your help, I really do appreciate it!

The difference between the two (for whitetails) is negligible. They actually are the same piece of brass before the 270 is necked down to .270

If you ever plan on hunting some larger game, the 30-06 may be a good choice due to the availability of larger bullets. You can easily find '06 bullets up to 220 grains, while it's not too common to find factory 270's over 150.

For deer only, I'd opt for the 270...But the deer will never know the difference if you hit em right.

Good luck!

I vote for the .270 Win, as well.

I too am also faced with this very same decision right now, in fact a little bit more complicated. I have been torn between the Ruger Ultra Light in either 270 or 3006 vs. the Ruger Stnls/synthetic in 300WSM.

My initial want was for a real light rifle, that I can pack up and down the mountain all day for deer, or elk. I do not even worry about "long range", because if I plan to hunt where long range is a factor I have a custom 340 Wea that will handle the situation with no prblem at all.

After very many daymares, and nightmares, I have come up with the following conclusion, at least for the moment >>> I am leaning towards the Ultra Light chambered in 3006 with the intent of handloading 165gr bullets in it, which should more than suffice for close to medium ranges on both deer and elk. Now, this is where some differences of opinion may arise, as I consider medium range to be in the neighborhood of 200 to 300yds. I do plan to make an extensive comparison study of ballistics before I finally make my purchase.

Up to now I have been using a 257 Wea for deer, but it is just too doggone heavy for me to pack all day. It is stnls, and bare rifle is 8 1/2#, plus scope and sling, and ammo. It is truly a "killer", but it is now in the process of being sold, as my older age is taking a toll on my strength >>> imagine that !!! Now I can understand why my Grampa, when I was 16yrs old, opted to buy himself a Remington 760 pump to hunt with when he was over 60 >>> he new what he was doing >>> I didn't at the time, BUT I do now !!! Hee ! Hee !

If I had to choose between the two I'd prefer the 30-06 because of the bullet selection . I don't use either one anymore ,but have gone to lighter rifles ,and smaller calibers .I would rather not think it was because I'm getting older though as Clearcut stated .

Either would work fine. However having owned and used both, I would go with a 270 Win. I have taken Antelope, WT deer, Mule deer, Moose and Elk with a 270 win. Match the bullet to the game and you'll be all right.

Justin2345...

is this the only gun you have? if so and that you are ONLY hunitng whitetail deer i would go with the 270win with 130gr. premium bullets.
like what pro-line said: if you hunt other things like bear ( black )and maybe hunt larger game like elk and moose i would go with the 30-06sprg.
but if it was me i would buy the 30-06sprg. becuase i think it is a far better round with bigger bullets.
the 300WSM sounds like another round you could look at. but not in remington though.
