Default Ruger M-77 270?

Does anyone who has this rifle ever chronographed the 130 grain bullets. I am looking at a new M-77 LH Ruger and while I was hoping for a 24 inch barrel, it looks like thats not an option unless I rebarrel which I might do.

I have seen darn few 270's with 24"-barrels.
You might look at Ruger's Grey laminate with a target grey barrel. This is a hunting rifle with a grey "teflon like" coating. I think this rifle comes with a 24" barrel? You might also look at the entire line of Remington rifles. Remington might make one or two models with a 24" barrel?

Good luck,

WK

I have a 1986 model Ruger M77 Ultralite in 270 and have killed 80 deer with it, but mine never has shot 130 gr ammo accurately. It is super accurate with 140 and 150 gr but will not shoot the 130 grs.

Hey Killer, The Rem 700 SPS has a 24" barrel in STANDARD calibers but it's not needed. Unless it's a MAG then he would only need a 22" barrel.

So far I have not seen a SPS in the LH model. The SPS however is my favorite rifle. I Have no right eye so I shoot LH but I am not naturally left handed so I can work a RH almost as well as a LH. I sure liked the LH Ruger I looked at a couple days ago. I also looked a the new Hawkeye in 270. Thjat one had a very good trigger for out of the box.

Have you considered the ruger #1 single shot rifle? They have longer barrels while retaining shorter overall length because of falling block design. The fact that it's a single shot presents no disadvantage in 99.3% of hunting situations. I'm sorry to hear about loss of your eye. The #1 is also fully ambidextrious by design.

James, I would also try the No 1's. Of course I'm not bias being my favorite rifle.

I've conographed alot of 270's in 130gr. And the number always comes out to around 35fps per inch or barrel loss or gain. The 22inch M77 fly's around 2980fps with standard 130 gr ammo. The No 1 26 inch barrel flys 3120fps with the same ammo and none of the added chamber pressure its all done thoughout the barrel as it builds pressure. Plus the bonus of barrel length and stability. The No 1 with the short falling block total length of rifle is still shorter than a standard 24" bolt action.

Hey Doe Dumper, You probably don't have room for any more.

I had not considered the No.l but thats a good idea. I can work those better than a bolt anyway since I am a righty shooting lefty. My ADL which has a 22 inch barrel shoots the Federal Fusions at 2860. Thats a little low but the deer go flop pretty fast.

I will check out the N0.l before I decide. Thanks for the replies.
