You list is odd to me. When I think of benchrest I don't think of any of the choice you have save one. There is a 22 lr benchrest circuit. but for centerfire none of the choices are common. Your list would have been more reasonable if you included: 6 PPC, 6 BR, 22 PPC, 22 BR, 6.5-284, 222, 30 BR etc. etc. Those are more logical choices for BR competition. Of those choice I would have to say either 6BR or 6.5-284 as I own one of each.

I know my list is different then what people would normally use but i wanted to know out of factory available ammo. Mos tof the rounds you listed are not factory available.

Are you wanting to acctually shoot in BR competitions? Or are you just wanting to plink off a bench and try to get good tight groups. For casual shooting, its completely up to you my man, nothing else matters.
Now, while I understand that just playing the game is supposed to be all the fun,at least having a chance to win is sort of nice. Entering any of these calibers in factory gun with factory ammoin a serious BR competition would be like entering a stock Kia Sophia in the Daytona 500 (cause stock cars ain't stock no more).
The .223 would be somewhat feasable, but you would have to get a custom barrel with a fast twist to stabilze heavier bullets, which still aren't loaded in factory ammo.

I would assume he wrote "more readily available caibers" becuase he wants to punch paper and have fun. Not compete in serious benchrest competition. I'll vote for the 22LR. I have a number of heavy barrel 22's and I can shoot all day long for a couple dollars in ammo.
It is going to be more for punching paper at 200 yards. I will use it sometimes in little tournaments at the gun range i go to but noone has a full custom bench rifle. I dont reload so i need to be able to get factory ammo for it. IM trying to get somewhere around 1/2in to 3/4in groups with it at 100 yards.

I'll go along with Ridge Runner as far as the 222. The 222 is famed for great accuracy, but factory ammo ispretty much a thing of the past. The 22-250 would probably be my pick for the 200 yard shooting you mentioned.
Any of the others are easily capable of .5" groups at 100 yards in the right gun with the right shooter.
The .223 in a heavy barrel "varmint" style AR-15 would be my choice.

I wish i had the money for an AR like that. Ill get all i want of M-16's soon though. I already have 223, 204, 22 Mag, and 17 HMR but theya re all for hunting so im looking to get another rifle and put a larger scope on it then what i use to hunt. Im still saving but i think it should have around $800 to $1000 for everything so im looking at used guns but i found another CZ that i like for $550.
