Default Shooting competitions?

I know of the IDPA as one of our guitar players' father is active in that, but what else is there? The local shooting range has some HUGE skeet and trap shooting events but I'm more interested in rifle competitions. Is there such a thing for the average joe and not just people with these star wars looking rifles? Any suggestions on how to find out about that? 90% of my trips to the range are during the week around 1 pm so nobody is really there to ask because they're at work and so is the owner which leaves his wife running it who barely knows how to find the right ammo you wish to purchase so I doubt she'd know.

NRA rimfire silhouette- allyou need is a .22. The course of fire is at 10 chickens, pigs, turkeys, and rams from about 35 to 100 yards, standing. Its a lot of fun.

CMP qualifier matches- a lot of clubs have these a few times a year, they will give you an M1 Garand (some will give AR-15s) + ammo + coaching to shoot an NRA highpower course. Most of these are reduced range Highpower matches at 100 to 200 yards. Course of fire is typically 10 standing slowfire at 200 yards, 10 rapid fire sitting 300 yards or at a reduced target, 10 rapid fire prone 300 yards or reduced targets prone, then 20 slowfire prone 600 yards or reduced target. If you do this a few times, you'll probably get hooked and will end up buying a 'star wars' rifle anyhow.

The 3 gun clubs i go to all ahve there own little shoots. I just went to one last weekend that was a speed pistol shoot. They time how lng it takes you to shoot 5 bowling pins off a table. The fastest time wins. I go to a few trap shoots, there is also my favorite which is the best all around shot. We do 10 standing pistol shots at 25 yards, 25 trap, and 10 off hand rifle shots at 100 yards.

The NRA is simply the governing body on many types of rifle and pistol competitions. You don't have to join to shoot in their competitions, but one benifit of membership is that the NRA tracks your scores and abilities and assigns you an ability level (marksman, sharpshooter, expert, master, high master) based on your scores.
