sometimes feed problems are caused by the ammo, right?
Just curious before I go out and buy some high dollar ammo.
I got a new S&W 9mm pistol but all I've ran through it so far is cheap ammo (so cheap the guy gave it to me unsolicited when i purchased the gun) and sometimes when I pull the slide back to load a round the cartridge gets about halfway up and stops but if I kinda tap the back of the slide it'll pop on in there. This doesn't (or hasn't so far) happen when I'm actually firing.
I'd hate to have to sell a new gun but I don't want the thing if I have about a 50-50 shot of not getting a good feed.

Yes, sometimes ammo can be the cause. Purchase some Winchester white box 115fmj and give that a run. It's a very basic and cheap mass produced 9mm. Your pistol should digest that just fine, then you will know it was the ammo and not the pistol. Make sure the magazine feed lips are not bent, if you have more than one mag try the others to see how they feed. Last, some brand new guns need to be fired a few hundred rounds to "break them in".

Ammo is sometimes the case with fail to feed problems but not as often as people think. Usually ball ammo will feed best in semi autos. Without knowing the exact model you have,it's harder to diagnose. I realize this is stupid question but are you letting slide go from full rearward position?
My reccomendation is send it back to S&W and make them fix it since gun is new.

I had the SW40VE and it had some problems feeding certain ammo. It did very well with Winchester, UMC, and American Eagle FMJ ammo. It also liked Remington Golden Saber Hollow Points. I would not shoot Fiocchi ammo well at all. I only fired about 30 out of 50 rounds of it, The rest wouldnt go bang.
