Default 7mm rem mag

Our local wally world is selling the heck out of rifles in 7 mm rem mag. I'm not too knowledgable about this caliber. How does it compare to say a 30-06 or .270. Is the recoil harsh considering it's a mag? Would you guys reccommend it for an all around cartridge?

Recoil would be about the same as a hot loaded 30-06. For taking game, the 7MM Rem Mag fits in with the 270, 280 and 30-06. I have owned five of them and did my best to like this caliber. It didn't work and I would never own another. Its recoil is well above that of the 270 but its performance is not all that much better for the kick you get. Its a good caliber if you don't mind the recoil but I don't need the punishment.

For years I used the .270 and only used the 7mag for powerline hunting where the shots were lone range.

Ballistically, the 7mm Rem. Mag is very similar to the .30/'06, firing bullets of similar weight at perhaps slightly higher velocities. But the terminal performance on game is about the same as the '06 - just slightly better than the .270 Win. but not much!

It is a decent all-round cartridge, and I would say the recoil is not enogh worse than the '06 to be a putoff to people who can shoot the '06 well......

I've owned five 7 mags over the years. It's a decent cartridge, but realistically it's not going to do anything a .30-06 or .270 can't do. Personally, I've come to prefer the .30-06 to the 7 mag.

I bought a 7mm re mag Savage bolt-action with a scope at a closeout sale at Wal-mart for $170.00 a couple of years ago. It was a model from the previous year with no accu trigger. It shot great, no problems at all. My doctor made me abandon magnum loads due to an injury and I sold the thing for $300.00. I never would have sold it if I could still use it.

If you are just deer hunting in GA, a .270 or a 7mm-08 will do all that needs to be done to a whitetail...If you are long range hunting mule deer and elk in CO then a 7mm mag would be a good choice.....

The 7mm Rem Mag is a great all-around cartridge. Especially out west where long distance shots are more common. Like the others said, it's similar to the 30-06, but it shoots faster and flatter. The recoil isn't bad. I personally prefer it over the 30-06 because of the flatter trajectory. Sure, it can't really do anything that the 30-06 or 270 can't do, but then again the 300 Win Mag can't do anything that the 7mm can't do. Dead is dead.

I"™ve used the 7 mm Rem. Mag for years for deer hunting and find it"™s an excellent cartridge. Good for long range. Personally I don"™t find the recoil all that bad and in the excitement of the hunt you will not notice it but at the range the recoil is manageable unless you"™re very recoil sensitive...
