Default .45 Auto or .40 S&W ??

I'm going to buy a semi-auto. I'm leaning towards the .40's cause of balistics. Wish I could take both out and shoot them . . . but I can't.

I'm wondering if y'all think the .40 has ample knock-down power for "home defense"?

Any particular brand of gun in the .40 or .45?
There's a Ruger P90 .45 Auto with original case, extra clip for $375 at local (trustworthy) pawn shop.

.45 Auto has more lead, and there's lots of fans of the .45 semi-auto cals, especially .45 ACP.

40 S&W is a good round, and it shoots well, makes a nice sub-compact. My dad has one. I think you'll be happy with either one, and yes, the .40, with home defense loads, has PLENTY of knockdown power for home defense, so no one is going to sue you after getting hit with a personal-defense load, because they'll be dead.

Stay away from the Taurus Millenium, the trigger pull is bad and can't be adjusted.

I guess given one or the other I would pick the 45 Auto. However the 40 has good stopping power and its no accident that its so widely used by LE. I am comfortable with either and am just more familiar with the 45 ACP.

I keep a Glock 23 40 cal. with night sights in my underwear drawer for home defense. I firmly believe that 40 cal. is plenty for a defensive weapon, but in my house, if the G23 does work, the Benelli and 00 buck sure will.

I don't believe in knockdown power, but I wouldn't lose any sleep over you going to a 40.

I will stick to 45's for antipersonnel myself. Wasn't there a major city that tried the 45 for awhile and quit? Too much bleeding.

i like the 40 dont get me wrong. but in home defense i wouldnt think twice about the 45. thats the way id go. get yourself a 1911 in 45 stick in a hi-cap mag and youll be safe. i would go springfield if it were my choice. taurus runs a close second though.
