Default Browning BOSS

Just picked up a 7mm Browning Eclipse A-Bolt with a thumbhole stock and the Boss system. I mounted a Bushnell Elite 3200 4x12x40 on Leopold hardware. Yesterday my son and I went to the shooting range to try to "tune" the BOSS. It shot amazing out of the box, but my accuracy went south the longer we stayed and I played with the BOSS so I never felt I got the gun tuned to my chosen round- 150gr Winchester Ballistic Silver Tips.

Now, looking back, the accuracy issue may have been as a result of several things outside of the BOSS- I fired 70 rounds without cleaining the barrel and the barrel heated up (I mean HOT).

SO, tell me how stupid I was for not bringing a cleaning kit with me and letting the barrel cool longer between groups, but then- if anyone knows, how can I find the sweet spot for this round? The Browning site says between 2 and 3, but that is 10 settings.

I'm going back to the range tomorrowso if anyone has a Browning 7mm A-bolt and has tuned a cartridge- really ANY cartridge, I'll pick that up and take it with me. Plus, any advice on the BOSS would be appreciated.

My advice would be to shoot 3 shots and let it cool for 5-10 minutes. Nothing is worse for accuracy and barrel life than heat.

Might also want to try some 140gr bullets. My 7mag (Browning A-Bolt) never liked 150gr ammo of any sort (I relaod all my own).

Obviously the key is letting the barrell cool. I have been shooting a BOSS system Browning for about 15 years. The setting in your browning manual are pretty darn close, so I would start there at 2.5. Shoot your group. And work your way backwards and forwards as needed if the group tightens or opens up. When you are happy, stop. Be sure to take a piece of paper and pen along with you to make your own notes for each adjustment, so you can always go back to the necessary setting. And you can log eachdifferent ammo's reaction to changes.

Good Luck.

The boss adjusts barrel vibration dynamics similar to working up a load when reloading. All you need to do is try 3 shot groups, adjusting the boss 1 full number value until the group shrinks as much as it will and starts getting bigger. Then you can continue above while adjusting 1/10 number value on boss until optimum results. The quickest way to ruin a barrel is heat. Also,if it makes excessive muzzle blast-you can order a cr to replace ported unit.

I've fired an A-Bolt Eclipse in 7mm Rem Mag with the BOSS on it, and it didn't sound any louder than any other high-powered rifle, and it's the only one I've ever fired with one on.

I guess it must just depend what kind of muzzlebreak it is, and maybe what gun/cartridge it's mounted on.

HUH!!![8D] Fired and been around many BOSS equipped rifle, never seenlike that! They are noticably louder, unless equipped with the CR! Maybe that was the case for the rifle you fired.

I have to agree on the noise. I've videoed several people that were shooting bosses and they almost deafen me everytime...especially if we were in a shooting house. I thought my ears were going to start bleading the last time. 4x4size shooting house. Guy had a 7mag boss.I need to throw a set of muffs in my camera bag. All of those have been the ported version. Does the non ported version cut down on recoil as well as the ported? I wouldn't think so but Im not familiar with it.

Also if anyone is interested a good buddy of mine has an eclipse forsale in 300mag with bull barrel, boss, and laminated thumbhole stock. I think he's even throwing in 10boxes of hornady ammo and a leupold base for $850.00.

The BOSS - CR offersno reduction in recoil, just the "tuning" portion of the BOSS system.

I have owned one Boss equipped rifle and I will never own another. The disadvantages far outweigh the advantages.
