Default NEF Pardaner 12 ga. Turkey Edition

Just picked up one of thesethe other day for a price I couldn't turn down. After looking at it and thinking about it my shoulder is begging me not to fire a round through it. What do you guys think. 3 1/2" chamer out of a gun that weights 6 pounds. This is going to be bad.

Anyone out there have one of these? If you do how welldo they pattern and what ammo do they like?

Get the steel bar that they put in the H&R ultra slug guns. It will add some weight and help reduce recoil. I would also look at getting a better a recoil pad by simms or something. Or one of the slip on gel types, I have one and it works pretty well.

If it were me and I were going to get a H&R for turkey I would have just gotten the 10 ga instead of a 3 1/2 12 ga. To be honest I think you would have been just as good with a 3 inch magnum.

Correct me if I'm wrong guys but I can also shoot 3" out of it too right?

Paul, I too have have one of the Ultra Slug gun and I don't know what steel bar you are referring to. I know that it is considerably heavier than this Turkey gun I justbought. Can you give me some more info on that?

My Dad has this same exact gun and he loves it, all he did was put a recoil pad on the end and thats all. He's bagged 3 turkeys with it, he'd rather use that then his mossberg 500 or my brothers 870. You should be fine.

Thanks for the info. Can you tell me what ammo he is shooting through it and what kind of range he gets?

I'm taking all of your guys' advice and getting a slip-on recoil pad.

Yes you can shoot any shell out of that gun, 2 3/4 - 3 inch and 3 1/2 inch shells if you want. If it has a fixed extra full choke DO NOT shoot slugs out of it. If it has screw in chokes you could should be able to shoot slugs out of it if you use an IC or modified choke tube. I would say use 3 inch slugs since you have a 3 1/2 chamber. A 2 3/4 inch slug would work, but I have heard things about the chamber length effecting accuracy. Although I don't know how big of a deal that will be with a smooth bore anyway.

The ultra sluggers have a steel bar in the stock (at least mine does). If you take the recoil pad off and look in the hole you bolt the stock on with it should be in there. If you want I can take mine out and measure it for you. I think it weighs around a lb. or so. You could put anything in there you want really. They make mercury recoil reducers as well. The steel bar helps balance the ultra sluggers out as well with that big ole heavy barrel in the front.

I have one of these guns. Im not going to lie to you it will kick like a son of a gun. It will help to stick to the 3" turkey loads. I shoot the winchesters myself. They patteren really good. If you shoot the 3 1/2 high velocity magnum turkey loads you will be hurting. As for the "steel bar" for the H&R I have not heard about that.

Paul and Bryan,

Thanks for the info. I usually shoot Winchester Supreme out of my Winchester 1300. I actually switched to Federal #5's last year and I very impressed.

Paul,
Found the steel bar in my slug gun. I have not took the butt pad of the Pardner yet. Will the steel bar fit in the Pardner?

I plan on shooting this gun tomorrow on my day off. I just wish Turkey season started in the morning. The birds have been tearing it up off the roost this last week. It won't be long.

For a number of years Iused the standard New England Firearms Pardner for turkey hunting. The gun only handled 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells butit was so light a 3 inch turkey load would almost knock you into next week.

I ended up filling the hollow spot in the stock with lead shot and putting a slip on recoil pad on it. It helped but the old girl still got your attention on ignition. Of course if you had a tom in front of you, it took a lot of the sting out of the recoil.
