Default rem model 7400

i am new to rifles and just bought a second hand rem. 7400 that is a year old and in new cond. it has like a plastic shield that comes forward when the action is closed.the plastic is kind of flimsy and looks to me as it may serve as just a block to keep this area clear of whatever. should this be there or should i remove it. thanks for any input.

The part you are referring to is a dust cover. Don't remove it.

can this dust cover be replaced as it seems like a part that will wear out quickly.
