I have both a 7mm-08 Rem and a 270 Win and in all honesty there is not a dimes worth of difference between the two. It really boils down to whether or not you prefer a short action (7mm-08) or a long action (270). The 7mm-08 also has a little less recoil in the same weight rifle as a 270 but is you go with a light weight or feather weight in 7mm-08 like I have the recoil is comparable to a heavier 270. I really like both cartridges and find both to be very effective on deer. I prefer not to use a 30-06 on deer but that does not reflect badly upon the grand old cartridge. It just seems to me that the recoil increase, however slight, is not worth the return. I still suffer from a bad shoulder so any decrease in felt recoil is a definate plus. If you do get into handloading then a whole new world of possibilities opens up for all your cartridge candidates. If I were forced to pick a favorite for deer I would have to go with the very efficient 7mm-08 Rem. Good thing I don't have to pick.

If you decide on a Weatherby Vanguard in .270, I have a New in the Box Weatherby Vanguard for sale in the classifieds..

I'm an average shot. I enjoy going to the range. Once a week when the weather is agreeable. I would count out the 7mm-08 but honestly. I love the fact that it has such low recoil.Really the only thing keeping me from getting it is the price of ammunition and the lack of readily available ammunition.Still, I'm not going on an elk hunt or bear hunt or big fat arse elephant hunt. It's just for your average West Georgia Deer. Shaaaaa I guess to be completly honest. I should just hang it up and get the 7mm-08 because that's what I want. I just keep talking myself out of it with what if's. Well IF I get to win the lottery and go on a bear hunt or some thing else I'll just either buy another rifle or borrow a friends and save the $$.
That's strange, I don't work for Gander Mountain but the last time I was there it was plentiful and only about $1.50 more then the 30-06. Check online at Bass Pro Shops and Cabelas it's only about $2.00 more. That's not going to stop me from getting a 7mm-08 for my next rifle.
