My son wants a new Remington in 7mm-08. Which is the better gun for this caliber; the Model 7 or the BDL? Synthetic or wood stock?

Well one is a light weight, short, quick handling rifle and the other is a heavier, steadier, longer barreled rifle. One could argue you will get less recoil, more velocity and accuracy out of the 700 BDL. Both are passable rifles so the question is which one fits your son?

BTW, the 7mm-08 is an excellent cartridge choice with great ballistics and mild recoil.

If you are going to go with a short, medium-power round like the 7mm/08, then the Model 7 is the way to go. If you get a full-size rifle like the M 700, then I'd opt for a more powerful round like the .280 or the .30/'06. Maybe even a 7 Mag. or .300 Win.

Keep yore powder dry!!

the stainless model 7 is a good compromise in barrel bength, longer than the blue model 7 but 2" shorter than the 700, makes a great whitetail rifle in the 7-08. I like synthetics, a lil less recoil according to weight, and less bedding problems over time

with the 7mm-08 recoil shouldnt be an issue. so the one that fits you better i believe should be your choice

He has chosen a great caliber, why not take him to the store & let him have a feel of them all & let him choose the rifle as well, failing that I guess it boils down to how big he is & how much weight he can carry around.
The model 7 is the lighest but i'de prefer the 22 inch barrel of the bdl, another option is the mountain rifle, same weight as the model 7 but with a 22 inch barrel.I dont think the type of stock really matters, might to your son though so let him choose if you can.

Any reason why he only wants a remington, tikka make great accurate rifles at reasonable prices in 7mm-08 as well.

You sound like a great dad to have, good luck,i'm sure he'll like whatever you give him.

les1cam...

i am with frizzellr on this one. the model 7 would be a better rifle if he is gonna use it in a tree stand.
