It is probably flatter then the 7mag, but you can't shoot as big of bullets out f it. The .243 your looking at is probably flatter then the 7mag out to 400 yards or so.

In real life the 7mm rem mag will edge out the 270wsm in trajectory(be it slight with the lighter bullets). The 7mm rem mag will open up the gap at 150gr and up bullets. It is a little moreadapatable asit shoots 140-175gr bullets well and at a good clip. Where as the .277 tops out at 150's. Yes, a few 150gr plus offerings available for .277 but I would be willing to bet the 270wsm wouldn't preform very well above 150gr much like the 300wsm doesn't above 180gr's due to seating a longer bullet in short fat case.

Both are good choices for deer. While the.277 isadequate for elk and moose the.284 is better suited based on bullet choices alone for larger then deer!

I wouldn't want both and wouldn't trade a 7mm rem mag for 270wsm either but I hunt more then whitetails or mulies. I own a 270 win and 7mm rem mag, the .270has been back up duty for a number of years.I have decieded to sell it, asI have other rifles and will use the funds to start the process of building a .257 cal deer rifle.

TheFederal catalog shows the .270 WSM shootsjust barelyflatter than the 7mm Rem Mag with an equal weight bullet. Note that the WSM does it in a short action.

Remington backs that up but the gap is even wider.

Where can you even compare a 243 to a 7mag??? It is just not going to happen. Let it be a shortmag or not. The 7mag willl shoot flatter, hit harder, and do it more efficiecntly than any 270 will do, short mag or not.

I just researched this a lot and ended up buying a 270 WSM !! I whitetail hunt mostly so I really compared 140 grain bullets from Federal, Winchester, and Remington ! The 270 wsm "on paper" shoots a little flatter and has a little more energy down range !! I don't know about the real world much but @300 yards my gun has less drop than my buddy's 7 mag...........but it's not a whole lot .....probably 2" of difference !! I think he was shooting 140's like me but he may not have been............I'll have to ask him !!
