Question on mauser rifle.......

I have an old Argentine mauser bolt-action rifle that my Father left me.

I believe it is a model 98 but do not know for sure. It has been sporterized with a flip off scope mount and radiused bolt handle. It is now chambered for .30-06 but I don't believe that was the original chambering. I would also like to know what the original chambering was (7.65 X 54?)

I would really like to know exactly what I have. I never intend to part with it as, you know, it was my Fathers.

If I post some nice pictures of it and the markings on it, would anyone be willing and able to tell me what I've got? If so I will post good pics very soon or PM them to anyone who wants to help me out.

Any help would be much appreciated.

The Argentines were originally 7.65 x 54. Most likely you have a 1909.

The original chambering was 7.65X53mm (sometimes called the 7.65X54mm, but there weren't two different cases, contrary to rumor) the same cartridge as used byBelgian rifles of this era. Basically, this is almost a duplicate, case capacity-wise, of the 7.62X51mm NATO (.308 Winchester). It can be loaded to duplicate the .308 ballistically.(In the M1909 rifles).

As long as surplus ammo and reloading brass is avaliable, it makes no sense at all to rechamber one to .30/'06. Since it uses a slightly larger bullet diameter (.311" to .314"), often the 7.65mm barrels will not shoot .308" bullets too well, BUT MINE DOES!

Well for my $.02 there was nothing wrong with rechambering the rifle to '06 as this was the trend back in the days. Cheap ammo, bullets, brass and the whole deal made it very cost effective and produced a rifle with a little more downrange horsepower. I say shoot it and enjoy....a finecaliber by any standards.
