STW = "Shooting Times Westerner", or something like that. I beliweve the 7mm STW was a Layne Simpson creation. There is also a .358 STA, in which the "A" stands for Alaskan. Now, THAT is a very impressive cartridge indeed!

eldeguello has it pegged, Layne and some other staff members of shooting times I think it was 1991, took a rem 8mm Rem Mag and necked it down to .284, dubbed it the 7mm STW. It caught on so well that 6 years later the cartridge was factory produced, it started a magnum craze that goes on to this day. I had one built in 1996 by mark Bansner and boy is it an impressive cartridge, sighted in 2.6" high at 100 yds with a nosler 140 BT at 3550 fps,it drops 19.2" at 500. I've recently worked up a load with a nosler 160 gr accubond at 3340 fps, probably one of the better factory choices for LR shooting.
