Default AR-15 vs. Mini 14 for predator hunting?

I had originally wanted an AR-15 for fun and predator hunting but as I've been doing a little research the Ruger Mini 14 becomes more and more attractive, especially due to the price.

How do you guys feel they compare?

They are not even in the same league as far as quality and accuracy goes. I hear the newer mini 14's are better, but I doubt they are better than an AR. I would spend the extra money on an AR or get a bolt action. You could probably get a decent bolt action and scope for what a mini 14 would cost you. And it would be a much beter gun in my opinion.

Not to mention if you get a bolt action or single shot you can pick a different caliber if you want. Like a .243 or 22-250.

I have a bolt action .270 and though I know the difference I just feel like they're far too similar to get another bolt action. I am mainly wanting a semi-auto rifle powerful enough to take out yotes without making ridiculous craters on the back side of them that is also fun to shoot. So far it looks like both of these fit the bill. I'm still in the preliminary looking stage, though.

I see. I had looked at ARs upwards of 1000 dollars. I still have plenty more shopping to do apparently hehe.

In order to get a Mini to shoot as good as an AR you will need to call these guys www.ruger-mini-14-firearms.com and they are pretty expensive.

Mini-14 = incredibly reliable but extra mags can be $$ for good ones
AR-15 = more accurate than your avarage Mini but has that evil look and is not as easy to shoot from a bench

Buy a used mini and have an action job , trigger job and heavy barrel installed and get the best of both worlds.
I had a Colt Hbar that would shoot sub moa all day long butI enjoy shooting my Mini's more, especially the one in 222 as not everyone has one of them

If it were me, I'd get an AR-15.

if it were my intent to protect my self from mad dogs or the like ,with in ranges of 25 yd ,the mini would be my first choice. great feel a lot of fun to shoot . but if you expect to shoot 200 yd you should expect to mis all but some thing the size of a cow.ruger said that its accuracy acceptance is a 1.5 inch group at 50 yd, IMO thats pretty sad.
take the price that you'll pay for a ruger ,double it to get it fixed
and you still of been better off buying an AR 15.
like many have said ,get a bolt action ,you'll be so much happier in the long run.

if its between the AR and the Mini i would choose the AR hands down. There are many more options and accessories readily avalable for it. Down here in Beaumont the Minis run about $600-$650 and a AR with 16" barrel and collapsable stock run $725-$750. and those are bushmasters. I personaly like the qaud rail, loads of extras you can stack on that baby.
